    Tour Attractions

    Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, PA
Fallingwater is a house designed in 1935 by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) for the Kaufmann family, owners of Pittsburgh’s largest department store. One of Wright’s most widely acclaimed works, Fallingwater exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Fayette County, which is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Wright designed Fallingwater to rise above the waterfall over which it is built. Local craftsmen quarried native sandstone and other materials from the property and completed the construction of the main house, guest house and service wing in 1939. Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, artwork, and original Wright-designed furnishings intact.
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of the 20th century. His major works represented in the World Heritage inscription span 54 years of his illustrious career. In addition to Fallingwater, the inscription includes: Unity Temple, Frederick C. Robie House, Taliesin, Hollyhock House, Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House, Taliesin West, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. These eight sites have played a prominent role in the development and evolution of modern architecture during the first half of the 20th century and continuing to the present. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed Fallingwater and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List at a meeting in 2019. The inscription, The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, to the UNESCO World Heritage List represents the first modern architecture designations in the United States.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Kentuck Knob, PA
Welcome to Kentuck Knob, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most unique Usonian homes. Usonian, meaning affordable for the average American, was a signature design of Frank Lloyd Wright. Both dramatic and serene, the house, situated just below the crest of the hill, appears almost part of the mountain itself and stands 2,050 feet above sea level. Guests will learn about the Hagan family, Frank Lloyd Wright, and his vision for the house. Experienced interpreters guide you through Kentuck Knob, share stories and historical information, and offer unique insights into this wonderful house and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian architecture.
    Kinzua Bridge State Park, PA
The 339-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park, located in McKean County, is the home of the reinvented Kinzua Viaduct. The Viaduct, once the longest and tallest railroad structure at 2,053 feet long and 301 feet high, was partially destroyed by a tornado during 2003. Reinvented as a pedestrian walkway during 2011, visitors can stroll 600 feet out on the remaining support towers, peer miles out into the Kinzua Gorge, and gaze down through the partial glass platform at the end of the walkway.
    Eternal Flame Falls, NY
Mysterious and Definitely One of a Kind
Eternal Flame Falls is a 35-foot waterfall and one of its grottos actually contains a small flickering flame about 8 inches high and believed to be lit thousands of years ago by Native Americans. For a long time, scientists have believed that the fire burns because of gas pockets that rise from the old, extremely hot bedrock made of shale. The rock's high temperatures break down the carbon molecules in the shale, which in turn creates natural gas. However, a group of scientists from Indiana University led by Professor Arndt Schimmelmann, found that the shale under the waterfall isn't actually hot enough or old enough to be causing the formation of gas pockets. Schimmelmann says, “This flame and these seepages have occurred for millions of years in those areas and we know that the source rock, about 400 meters deep, is not very warm. It should not even be able to produce much gas at this temperature, yet the gas is coming and it’s not being depleted. So our hypothesis is that a different mechanism is responsible for continuous gas generation at depth.” In other words, something else must be keeping the "eternal flame" burning and to this day researchers still don't know exactly what that may be.
    Rock City Park, NY
Rock City Park is a majestic geological spectacle of enormous rock formations and is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This prehistoric ocean floor is the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate (also called ocean spar or puddingstone) and attracts thousands of visitors yearly. Located on top of Rock City Hill, on route 16, south of Olean, New York. Its altitude is 2,300 feet above sea level. Walk among natures creations and marvel at the rock formations! Scenic Views/Hiking Trails/Picnic Area/Gigantic Rock Formations/Newly Expanded Museum/Souvenir and Rock Shop/Virtual Video Tour/Fluorescent Rock Room/Refreshments and Snacks. OPEN: May – October
