Foxes and coyotes call the island their home as do rare snakes such as the Blue Racer. The island also offers a host of recreational activities, including fishing, hiking and biking. Pelee Island Bird Observatory’s (PIBO)
The Pelee Island Bird Observatory (PIBO) is an NGO devoted to the study and conservation of wild birds and their habitats. The most southerly place in Canada, Pelee Island on Lake Erie hosts a tremendous variety of migratory and resident birds. PIBO’s bird checklist highlights an impressive range of birds that have been recorded on Pelee Island including many Species at Risk in Canada, and many with limited breeding ranges in Ontario.
Our Mission is to Help Birds: Learn about species at risk on Pelee Island and other PIBO education and outreach programs. To gain a truly immersive experience of how you can help birds, come for a visit to PIBO and enjoy the treasures of the island.
Founded in 1866, Vin Villa remains the most historically significant winery in North America. Go behind the gates of this historical winery and discover the history of winemaking on Pelee Island as the secrets of Vin Villa unfold. The Vin Villa tour is by far the island’s most unique tour experience. Stroll through the beautiful grounds and learn the enticing history of the property. Touch the remnants of the 150 year old winery, and step back in time as you descend ground into the opulent, meticulously restored wine cellars.
On a northeastern spit of Pelee Island, perhaps the most southerly extension of Canada, 96 hectares have been set aside as a nature reserve. The blue racer snake is one of several rare species found within the reserve. There are remnants of deciduous forests and patches of wetland, rich in aquatic plants.
You will see the remains of a lighthouse, built in 1834, stand at the tip of the spit.
Fish Point Provincial Nature Reserve
Fish Point is a gently rolling, shallow-sand, limestone plain in the Great Lakes lowlands, with lacustrine nearshore features, including an excellent example of a sandspit and dune system extending south into Lake Erie. Its near-virgin, southern deciduous forest harbours several provincially rare plants, including the prickly pear cactus, and the hop tree. Rare animals include the fox snake, Lake Erie watersnake, and the giant swallowtail butterfly.
Like the famous Point Pelee spit located nearby on the mainland, Fish Point is an important stopover for migrating birds, and a bird-watchers paradise. Black-crowned night herons and other birds frequent a lagoon, and shorebirds are numerous.
